Boca Raton, Florida: Fire Explorer Post #315 from Boca Raton won First Place at the 13th Annual Explorer Competition held at the Coral Springs Fire Academy. On Sunday, April 14th nine teams competed from Boca Raton, Coral Springs, Estero A, Estero B, Lauderhill, Delray Beach, Margate, South Trail and Pembroke Pines in eight different events that put the Explorers fire and medical skills to the test. Boca Raton won 5 – First Place and 1 – Second Place trophy to be crowned the overall winner. This is the fourth time that Boca has won the title. No other post has achieved that many consecutive wins in the history of the competition. Beginning in January, Lead Advisor, Firefighter/Paramedic Jonathan Vought and the seven member team have practiced 2-3 times per week to prepare for this event. The training has been assisted by other members of Boca Raton Fire Rescue Services as well as the entire post. Post #315 has been attending and competing in local and national events since they organized in 2004. Through their hard work, commitment and dedication they have amassed many championships. Explorers attend meetings once a week throughout the year in the classroom and on the fire ground, training with firefighter/paramedics to get ready to attend the Fire academy, EMT and Paramedic school. After completing the necessary training, application process and rigorous testing process to date Boca Raton Fire Rescue has hired 7 Explorers from Post #315.

Fire Exploring is part of the Learning for Life section of the Boy Scouts of America. Fire & Emergency Services Exploring is a hands-on program that exposes participants to many career experiences, leadership opportunities, and community service activities. It gives them self esteem and teaches them to work as a team to achieve a common goal. The primary goals of the program are to help young adults choose a career path within fire and emergency services and to challenge them to become responsible citizens of their communities and country.

BOCA RATON, FLORIDA- Boca Raton Fire Rescue Services in conjunction with the Firefighters and Paramedics Benevolent Fund, Inc. will be hosting the 33rd Annual Boca Burn Softball Tournament. The tournament will be held the new Spanish River Athletic Complex, Countess De Hoernle Park, 1501 Spanish River Blvd., Boca Raton. Tournament games begin at 8:00 am on Saturday April 6th and continue through Sunday April 7th 2007. The public is invited to attend and admission is free. The proceeds from this event will benefit the Children’s Burn Camp of Florida. This camp is part of the Children’s Burn Foundation of Florida Inc. Every year Firefighters from Boca Raton volunteer a weekend at burn camp as a “burn buddy”. This getaway provides children, who are burn victims, a weekend of fun and entertainment while interacting with other children and Emergency Service Personnel. Twenty-four softball teams, from across the state of Florida will be competing in this charitable event. Your tax-deductible donations are welcome and can be made to the Boca Raton Firefighters and Paramedics Benevolent Fund. Proceeds will benefit the Children’s Burn Foundation of Florida, Inc. Last year the firefighters raised over five thousand dollars for the Children’s Burn Foundation. We look forward in seeing you, your family and friends to join your firefighters in a fun filled weekend of softball.

Boca Raton, Florida: Boca Raton Fire Rescue Services, Advanced Life Support Competition Team A took 1st Place at the 1st Annual Advanced Life Support Competition held in Margate, Florida. The three member team
which consisted of Paramedic Lieutenants Shea Miller, Jeff Lazzeri and Firefighter/Paramedic James Haag were met with a grueling challenge. The team responded to a bus accident where they had to triage, treat and coordinate transportation for 21 patients with a variety of medical and traumatic emergencies. There were 11 teams that competed from South Florida and one international team from the Mexican Red Cross. In
May Boca Raton Fire Rescue Services will be hosting the 6th Annual Boca Raton EMS Challenge.
Competitions have become a valuable tool. Boca Raton Fire Rescue teams have been competing in events since 1981. The teams train hard all through out the year on their own time to prepare for competitions. Training and competing allows teams to network, share ideas, training methods and equipment. The information that is taken back to the department is shared during training sessions which helps to provide the highest quality of emergency care to our citizens.

Boca Raton, Florida: Boca Raton Firefighters and Paramedics responded to a different type of family emergency. A local resident heard ducks chirping from a storm drain and a frantic mother duck pacing nearby. The crew on Truck 4, located at 351 W. Yamato Road was called to assist the mother who lost all 12 members of her family. Fire Captain Mike Altamuro and his crew quickly removed the heavy steel grate and lowered a ladder down into the drain. PRM/Lieutenant Robert Cervi climbed down and was able to haul 9 ducklings to safety. Three others remained in the pipe and would not come out. FF/Driver Chris Innerst went down an adjacent drain with a fire hose. Using a stream of water he gently flushed the remaining 3 ducklings into the waiting arms of Cervi who reunited them with their mother. After a quick check and head count mom and her ducklings quickly left the area.

 Boca Raton, Florida: In a closed door meeting, Boca Raton City Council members met in an executive session to discuss the possibility of opening the firefighters’ contract to specifically talk about Police Officers’ and Firefighters’ retirement plan funding issues. The city has been in talks with the firefighters and police officers in hopes of achieving $5 million dollars of immediate savings. In an effort to help the city reach their goal, John Luca, President of the firefighters’ union and his leadership team were ready to meet
and start the dialogue. Unconscionably, when the doors opened, the city refused to meet with the firefighters. Instead they choose to wait on an independent study, which could cost the city in excess of $40,000 and would take nearly 6 months to complete. Opening the contract at this time would have a potential savings of $150 million dollars over the next thirty years. President Luca is calling a press conference at 11am on Monday, February 25, at Fire Station #5, located at 2333 West Glades Road, to discuss the City’s decision. Boca Raton Police Detective Kelly Shifflet, President of The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 38 will also be on hand for the conference.

CPAT Test
The Nationally accredited IAFF/IAFC CPAT Test will be conducted by Boca Raton Fire Rescue during the month of March 2013.This test is open to anyone who may need it to get into Fire School or to be hired by a Department that requires it.

Boca Raton Fire Rescue will be accepting applications in April and a completed CPAT will be required to submit an application.

Calling all kids to bring your parents to college – FAU, that is – on Saturday, February 23 for the Hottest Fire Rescue Expo in Boca Raton’s history! Plans for this year’s FAMILY EXPO include action-filled exhibits for children and adults to enjoy, such as a vehicle extrication demonstration and a live fire demonstration. Of particular interest should be the Side-by-Side Fire Sprinkler exhibit, which profoundly illustrates the value of fire sprinklers in the home. The City’s Fire Rescue Services Department’s state-of-the art fire engines, medical units and even the 1926 vintage engine, Old Betsy, will be on display. 

Fun-filled activities for the kids include a bounce house slide, face painting, and competitions for hose rolling and squirting water; and everyone can munch on hot dogs, popcorn, and other refreshments. A number of other City departments will be on site to provide interesting information regarding City services. This year Fire Rescue is partnering with the Police Department to provide Child Passenger Chair Safety Checks and Installation. Folks from Boca Raton Regional Hospital and Red Cross will offer blood pressure screening and health evaluations as well as lessons on safety.
